This week our Women’s History Month honoree is Sheryl Sandberg. Sheryl’s impressive titles include Chief Operating Officer of Facebook, Founder and Board Chair of the non-profit Lean In (encouraging women to pursue their ambitions in spite of challenges), and author of the best selling book by the same name. She is also a wife and mom of two children, and is noted for her advice on how to make family a priority while continuing to pursue professional goals. Sheryl has many famous quotable and inspiring pieces of advice, but we especially love this one:
“The more women help one another, the more we help ourselves.”
Sheryl is using her platform to help other women succeed in leadership roles. She shares the lessons she’s learned during her 25-year career, with advice ranging from the practical—enlist the support of spouses, family and staff—to the inspirational—“Done is better than perfect…let go of unattainable standards”. She advocates for women (and men) to help one another professionally in peer-to-peer circles. She also praises one-on-one mentor/sponsor relationships, but says they should develop naturally, for the purpose of solving specific problems, rather than be generic and forced.
We applaud women who commit to helping other women overcome barriers. This resolve to share and nurture is at the heart of NBCF’s mission. Our CEO and founder, Janelle Hail, started NBCF because she was thankful for the quality care she received which led to the early detection of her own breast cancer. She wanted women in need to have this same access to information and support. Today, NBCF serves women across the U.S. through our life-saving programs, thanks to Janelle’s vision to help women.
While our focus is on breast health, and Sheryl’s is on leadership, she is a great example of our commitment to Helping Women Now. We want to hear how you’re using your talents and experiences to help others. Let us know on our Facebook page or in the comments below.
