“Pink spas are bringing awareness to breast cancer in a way that’s unique and fun. Hot tubbing can be a great method of relaxation, allowing you to get centered, have fun and reconnect with loved ones during a time that can be very stressful,” says Kathleen Shawl Parkes, breast cancer survivor. Aquatic therapy, which can be done in a pool or hot tub, can be a viable part of the rehabilitation and exercise plan for those recovering from breast cancer treatment although the water should not be above 88 degrees. The buoyancy of the water can increase range of movement; the viscosity can help with gradual strength training; and the hydrostatic pressure can reduce edema within the effected limb. Of course, consulting a doctor is advised before beginning any new physical therapy or exercise regime.
According to the National Cancer Institute, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime; when detected early in the localized stage, the five-year relative survival rate is 100%. Since 2001 NBCF has provided an estimated 937,500 early detection and breast health services to women in need.
Recognized as one of the leading breast cancer organizations in the world, NBCF’s mission is to assist women now by providing help and inspiring hope to those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education and support services. A recipient of Charity Navigator’s highest 4-star rating for eleven years, NBCF provides women Help for Today…Hope for Tomorrow® through it’s National Mammography Program, Beyond the Shock® Early Detection Plan, and breast cancer research programs.
