Patient Navigation

JPS Health Network’s RN Clinical Nurse Breast Cancer Navigator addresses patients’ barriers to breast cancer treatment and guides patients through their treatment journey. The Breast Cancer Navigator works with patients to reduce delays from diagnosis to treatment and helps them complete treatment on schedule. JPS’ RN Clinical Nurse Breast Cancer Navigator ensures that patients have an oncology appointment scheduled within 30 days of diagnosis. The Navigator also helps patients access treatment at JPS Oncology and Infusion Center and provides support to increase treatment schedule adherence. At JPS, the majority of breast cancer patients are uninsured or underinsured and almost all are low-income.

“Recognizing that patients and families are feeling overwhelmed and lost while dealing with a diagnosis of breast cancer is why navigation is so important. The role of the Clinical Nurse Navigator is to be a support person to the patient and their family as they maneuver through the complex maze of cancer care. The Clinical Nurse Navigator fulfills this role by providing education and emotional support to cancer patients and their loved ones as they begin their cancer journey, throughout their treatment plan, and as the patient transitions to remission or end of life care.

“Patients face a multitude of challenges while dealing with a diagnosis of breast cancer. The Clinical Nurse Navigator is there to assist the patient and their family by coordinating their care to ensure barriers are removed and access to timely care is the priority. The Clinical Nurse Navigator is equipped to provide a variety of interventions to support the patient and family as they cope with the financial, psychological, logistical, and healthcare delivery system.” — Kathyrn “Kitty” Sorlie, Director, JPS Oncology and Infusion Center
